John Howe (Canadian, b. 1957). Original watercolor painting on rag paper, 14.25 x 10 inches.
This painting illustrates the moment in which a knight draws his sword to slay a adder that has bitten him as Arthur and Mordred discuss peace. The drawing of the sword is seen as a hostile act and causes the two armies to engage in the final battle that brings an end to Arthur's reign. The painting is reproduced in The Fall of Camelot (in the 'Enchanted World' series of illustrated books published by Time-Life in 1983, p. 129. )
