‘Word, image and ideology in Charlotte Guest’s Geraint the son of Erbin’

This paper will explore the relationship between text and image in Charlotte Guest’s English translation of Geraint, first published in 1840. In her revised second edition (1877), she firmly re-iterates the tale’s links with Cardiff Castle in an attempt, I would argue, to anchor events firmly in the South Wales landscape. By doing so she is reminding her readers of the Welsh context of Geraint in the wake of Tennyson’s appropriation of the tale in his Idylls of the King.
